A district education official has stepped forward to offer the clearest account yet of a troubling incident at Nyinahin Catholic Senior High School in the Ashanti Region, in which a teacher and a female student became embroiled in a physical altercation that has since drawn widespread public concern.
Eric Aboagye, Public Relations Officer of the Atwima Mponua District Education Directorate, addressed the matter on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem morning show, walking listeners through the sequence of events that he says ultimately led to the confrontation. His account paints a picture of an evening that spiralled out of control — beginning with a curfew violation and ending with a student receiving medical attention and a teacher taken in for questioning.
It Began with a Broken Curfew
According to Aboagye, the incident unfolded on a Monday evening at a private hostel that accommodates students of the school. Three male students had left the hostel premises and returned after the facility’s gate had already been locked for the night. The gate closes at 9:00pm, and the students arrived back around 10:00pm — a full hour past the deadline.
The teacher on duty that evening declined to let them in. “When they came back late, the teacher in charge told them to go back because the gate was already closed and he could not open it at that time,” Aboagye explained. What should have been a straightforward enforcement of hostel rules, however, quickly deteriorated.
Rather than accepting the consequences of their late return, the students allegedly responded with hostility — pelting stones at the hostel in what the PRO described as a direct act of aggression. The caretaker, alarmed by the behaviour, reported the incident to the hostel owner, who then contacted the police over what were characterised as threats against the teacher’s safety.
Escalation and Alleged Threats
The situation did not end there. Aboagye revealed that the three male students were subsequently asked to vacate the hostel entirely — a decision that appears to have inflamed tensions further rather than defusing them. The teacher later reported to authorities that the students had directly threatened to attack him after their West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE), suggesting a level of hostility that extended well beyond a single evening’s dispute.
It was against this already volatile backdrop that a female student entered the picture. According to the directorate’s account, the removal of the male students from the hostel triggered a separate confrontation involving the girl, who allegedly directed offensive remarks at the teacher. “The female student, out of anger, made some comments which the teacher responded to. Unfortunately, the exchange escalated,” Aboagye said.
He added that during the heated exchange, the student made reference to the death of her father — a disclosure that, according to his account, intensified the altercation further. The precise nature of what happened in those moments remains a matter for investigators, but the outcome was serious enough to require medical intervention for the student.
Authorities Step In
Once the confrontation reached its peak, school authorities moved quickly to involve law enforcement. The assistant headmistress responsible for domestic affairs contacted the police commander directly, and both the teacher and the student were attended to. The teacher was taken into custody to assist with ongoing investigations, while the student was issued a medical examination form and subsequently treated at a health facility.
“The student has since been treated and discharged,” Aboagye confirmed, adding that she is currently in stable condition. The speed with which medical attention was sought and the decision to detain the teacher for questioning suggest that school and district officials are treating the matter with appropriate seriousness, even as the full facts are still being established.
A Student on the Cusp of Finishing School
What lends the incident an added dimension of gravity is the academic standing of the female student at the centre of it. Aboagye disclosed that she is a final-year student sitting her WASSCE examinations and is offering Home Economics. At the time of the incident, she had already completed her Biology paper — with only one remaining examination standing between her and the end of her secondary school journey.
The timing could hardly be more fraught. WASSCE examinations represent one of the most consequential periods in any Ghanaian student’s life, carrying significant weight for university admissions and future opportunities. The fact that a student is navigating a traumatic incident during these final days of school raises legitimate questions about the welfare support available to her and whether she will be able to sit her remaining paper under circumstances that allow her to perform at her best.
Questions That Remain
While Aboagye’s account provides important context around what preceded the altercation, it is worth noting that it represents the perspective of the district education directorate — a body with an institutional relationship with the teacher involved. The directorate’s framing, which emphasises the offensive remarks allegedly made by the student, does not settle the central question of what exactly the teacher did and whether his response was in any way proportionate or appropriate.
That question is precisely what investigators are now tasked with answering. The fact that the teacher was taken into custody indicates that authorities are not treating the directorate’s account as the final word. A full and impartial investigation — one that takes seriously the experience of the student and gives weight to her account of events — is essential if any meaningful outcome is to emerge from this incident.
For now, the school community in Nyinahin is left waiting. A student is recovering. A teacher is under investigation. And a case that began with three young men missing a curfew has raised uncomfortable questions about discipline, power, and the safety of students within Ghana’s school system — questions that deserve clear and honest answers.
