Work with Meaning — Every role at MTN Nigeria connects to a bigger mission. Employees are not just filling seats; they are powering digital inclusion, economic growth, and social development across the nation.

MTN Nigeria is an organization that believes in its people. It creates conditions for talent to flourish and builds systems that reward dedication, innovation, and integrity.

The Role: What Is a Coordinator – Special Buildings?

The Coordinator – Special Buildings sits within the Network Division and reports directly to the Senior Manager – Special Buildings. The role carries a clear and compelling mission: to provide expert direction and coordinate all processes involved in the design and construction of assigned MTNN buildings, spatial facilities, and installations.

This means ensuring strict compliance with company requirements, government regulations, and quality standards at every stage of the construction lifecycle — from initial concept and design to construction, acceptance, and close-out.

At its core, this role is about translating the business needs of MTN Nigeria into tangible physical structures that are safe, compliant, functional, and built to last. It requires a blend of technical knowledge, project management discipline, regulatory awareness, and the ability to coordinate multiple stakeholders simultaneously.

Key Responsibilities

The Coordinator – Special Buildings carries a diverse and dynamic portfolio of responsibilities that span the entire construction project lifecycle. Here is a detailed breakdown of what the role entails:

1. Technical Expertise and Design Oversight

The coordinator is expected to bring deep technical knowledge to every assigned project. This includes providing expert input into the design and construction process, reviewing project designs and technical documentation, and ensuring that all work complies with MTNN standards, relevant building codes, and all applicable regulatory requirements.

The role also involves advising user departments on how to translate their business requirements into actionable project briefs — bridging the gap between operational needs and construction realities. Guiding the development of buildable, compliant designs is a critical part of this advisory function.

2. Project Brief and Documentation Preparation

A key deliverable of this role is the preparation of detailed project briefs and technical specifications derived from user department requirements. These documents serve as the foundation for everything that follows — from design development to contractor engagement and construction execution.

The coordinator is also responsible for reviewing and validating contract bid documents to ensure they are comprehensive, compliant, and reflective of MTNN’s standards and expectations.

3. Digital Tools and Project Management Software

MTN Nigeria is a technology company at its core, and its construction processes reflect that. The Coordinator – Special Buildings is expected to leverage project management tools such as MS Project, Primavera, and BIM (Building Information Modelling) tools for scheduling, documentation, and reporting.

Effective document management is a critical part of this role — maintaining digital versions of drawings, models, and revisions with rigorous accuracy and version control to ensure that all stakeholders are always working from the most current and correct information.

4. Coordination of Design Development and Approvals

The coordinator plays a central role in managing the development of project designs from inception through to regulatory approval. This involves coordinating with design teams, consultants, regulatory bodies, and internal stakeholders to ensure that approvals are secured in a timely and compliant manner.

5. Pre-Construction Workshops and Team Preparation

Before a spade touches the ground, the coordinator facilitates pre-construction workshops to ensure that all project team members — contractors, consultants, site supervisors, and internal departments — have a thorough understanding of the final design drawings, specifications, and project expectations. This preparatory step is critical to minimizing errors, miscommunications, and costly rework during construction.

6. Site Process Management and Construction Oversight

Once construction begins, the coordinator assumes responsibility for initiating and controlling site-related processes, workflows, and procedures. Regular site inspections are conducted to monitor construction progress, assess quality, track schedule adherence, and ensure cost control.

This hands-on oversight role requires a sharp eye for detail, a strong understanding of construction methods and materials, and the ability to make informed, timely decisions on site.

7. Compliance with MTNN Policies

Ensuring strict compliance with MTN Nigeria’s building, environmental, and safety policies is non-negotiable. The coordinator is the guardian of standards on every project, responsible for identifying and addressing any deviations from established policies before they become costly problems.

8. Reporting and Communication

Transparency and accountability are central to the coordinator’s mandate. This includes preparing and presenting weekly and monthly project reports to the Senior Manager – Special Buildings, as well as ad hoc updates as required. Clear, accurate, and timely reporting keeps all stakeholders informed and enables senior leadership to make well-grounded decisions.

9. Project Acceptance, Handover, and Close-Out

No project is complete until it has been formally accepted, handed over, and closed out in accordance with MTNN’s processes. The coordinator is responsible for coordinating all aspects of the acceptance and handover process — ensuring that all deliverables are in place, all documentation is complete, and all identified defects have been resolved before the project is declared complete.

Who Should Apply? Qualifications and Experience

MTN Nigeria is seeking candidates who combine formal educational qualifications with practical professional experience. Here is what the ideal candidate looks like:

Educational Requirements

Applicants must hold a first degree in one of the following disciplines:

  • Architecture
  • Civil Engineering
  • Quantity Surveying
  • A related construction or built environment discipline

The degree provides the technical foundation upon which the practical skills of this role are built. It signals a rigorous training in design principles, structural systems, cost management, or a combination of these disciplines.

Professional Registration

Registration with at least one recognized construction industry professional body in Nigeria is mandatory. Acceptable professional bodies include:

  • ARCON — Architects Registration Council of Nigeria
  • COREN — Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria
  • NIQS — Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors
  • NIOB — Nigerian Institute of Building

Professional registration demonstrates that the candidate has met the standards set by their industry and is recognized as a competent practitioner by their peers.

Project Management Certification

A PMP (Project Management Professional) certification is required. This globally recognized credential, awarded by the Project Management Institute (PMI), validates the candidate’s ability to manage complex projects across all phases — initiating, planning, executing, monitoring, controlling, and closing.

The PMP certification is particularly relevant to this role because it signals not just technical knowledge but a systematic, structured approach to project delivery — essential for managing construction projects of the scale and complexity typical at MTN Nigeria.

Language Proficiency

Candidates must be fluent in English, both written and spoken, to effectively communicate with diverse stakeholders, prepare technical documentation, and deliver reports to senior management.

Experience Requirements

The role requires between 3 and 7 years of relevant professional experience, including a minimum of 3 years in construction project management specifically. Candidates should have experience working within a medium to large organization, where the complexity of stakeholder management, compliance requirements, and reporting structures is comparable to what they will encounter at MTN Nigeria.

The experience requirement is not merely about the number of years spent in the industry — it is about depth, breadth, and demonstrated impact. Candidates should be prepared to speak to specific projects they have managed, challenges they have overcome, and results they have delivered.

The Culture: Life Inside the Y’ello Family

One of the most compelling aspects of working at MTN Nigeria is the culture — a culture built on shared values, clear behavioral expectations, and a genuine commitment to the wellbeing and development of every employee.

MTN Nigeria’s culture is defined by a set of “obsessions” — behaviors that keep the culture strong, safe, and aligned with the company’s mission:

Light It Up! — MTN Nigeria wants its people to bring their whole selves to work — all their intelligence, energy, creativity, and heart. The company believes in the full value of every individual and actively works to create an environment where that value is recognized, celebrated, and channeled toward meaningful outcomes.

Raise Your Hand. Speak Your Mind. — MTN Nigeria is not a culture of silence or deference. Employees are encouraged — indeed, expected — to respectfully but firmly challenge anything that threatens the company’s values or its commitment to doing the right thing. Truth-telling is respected, and those who speak up are protected and appreciated.

Collaborate. Don’t Isolate. — Knowledge is meant to be shared at MTN Nigeria. The company values team players who understand that individual greatness is only meaningful when it lifts the collective. Cross-functional collaboration, mentorship, and knowledge transfer are deeply embedded in the way MTN Nigeria operates.

Things Always Get Better Here. — MTN Nigeria is a company in constant motion — always improving, always evolving, always finding new ways to deliver more value to its customers, its employees, and its stakeholders. Employees are expected to take ownership of their own growth and contribute actively to the continuous improvement of the organization.

Why This Role Matters

Infrastructure is not a background function at MTN Nigeria. Buildings and facilities are strategic assets — they house the people, systems, and equipment that power Nigeria’s telecommunications network. When a special building project is delivered on time, on budget, and to specification, it directly supports MTN Nigeria’s operational capacity, employee productivity, and service delivery to millions of Nigerian subscribers.

The Coordinator – Special Buildings is therefore not a support role — it is a value-generating, mission-critical role that sits at the intersection of technical expertise, project management discipline, and organizational compliance.

For the right candidate, this is an opportunity to build a legacy — project by project, building by building — within one of Nigeria’s most admired organizations.

Commitment to Inclusion and Diversity

MTN Nigeria is committed to creating a diverse and inclusive workplace. The company actively encourages applications from eligible females and persons with disabilities. MTN Nigeria believes that diversity of thought, background, and experience strengthens the organization and enriches its culture.

Important Notice: Recruitment Integrity

MTN Nigeria Communications Plc maintains a strict, transparent, and ethical recruitment process. The company does not, and will never, request payment of any kind from applicants at any stage of its recruitment processes — including job application, CV review, interview, assessment, or final processing.

If you are approached by anyone claiming to represent MTN Nigeria and requesting payment in connection with this or any other vacancy, you should treat this as fraudulent activity. MTN Nigeria is not liable for fraudulent publications of job offers made in its name or for the unauthorized use of its brand in recruitment scams.
